Latest News Articles on GM Food
Genetically Modified (GM) food continues to be a hot topic for debate and protest. One question that may be asked is how do GM foods fit in with the NSDA vision for sustainable and diverse agriculture in the Tropical Far North? So far, GM foods appear to be designed to cater for broad acre mono-culture crops and "industrial" agricultural systems - the antithesis of the NSDA vision. Even so there is a persistent push by the producers of GM technologies for Australian regulators to accept the introduction of GM crops. At the same time opponents are arguing that the risks to the environment, sustainable agricultural systems and human health are too high.
This newsletter includes a brief synopsis of recent news articles reporting on the use and development of GM food crops, the court cases involved, government responses, the scientific debates, and the human and animal health issues. To balance the issue, the synopsis also looks at recent articles that focus on the ability of organic and biodynamic farming to achieve the very outcomes claimed to be sought through the farming of GM foods, such as environmental and health benefits.
It is hoped that the following report and links will help keep you up-to-date with the latest developments and thinking on the issue, and to help you continue making informed decisions on growing, manufacturing and purchasing food in support of the NSDA vision.
