 APC10 - Australasian Permaculture Convergence September
Permaculture Solutions for a Changing World - Kuranda 24th - 27th September
 The Australasian Permaculture Convergence APC10 is a massive event with a stunning array of hands-on workshops and talks in a range of streams including sustainable approaches to agriculture and land management. There will also be film screenings, trade displays, performers and a Schools Gardens Workshop to engage teachers, parents and kids with some of Australia's most experienced school gardens designers.

Guest speakers include Bill Mollison, permaculture co-founder, Major General Michael Jeffery, former Australian Governor-General, Costa Georgiadis, from Costa's Gardening Odyssey and Darryl Hannah, actor and environmentalist. Read more...


Vital Soils Project - Mareeba

Vital Soils produce vital food, vital people and vital communities. The Vital Soils Project is a collaboration of government, private enterprise, regional NRM bodies and community organisations committed to avoiding waste, improving the economic and environmental sustainability of farming communities and improving environmental health in the region. The initiative provides a means to 'close the loop' on key nutrient resources and convert "waste" to a high value input for local agriculture. This will provide multiple economic, environmental and social benefits to our region. Read more...

The Sustainable Living Expo on the 22nd of August will showcase sustainable living information, services, products and innovative ideas in the Cairns region. It's an excellent way to find out how to live a more sustainable lifestyle and reduce our impacts, while enjoying a fun, colourful and inspiring day out. Read more...

Community Action Grants - get in quick!
There is a current funding opportunity under Caring for our Country - Community Action Grants 2010-11 for community organisations.  Up to $8 million is available to help community groups protect the environment and to support sustainable farming practices. Applications opened on Tuesday 6 July 2010 and will close 31 August 2010

More information about the 2010-11 round is available on the website www.nrm.gov.au Further inquires can be made at communityactiongrants@nrm.gov.au or call 1800 552 008. The NSDA received a grant under this program in the previous round, for its Soil Health Workshops to be delivered in November this year – check the website for further details.

 Successful atherton workshop -'Coping with Extremes in Climate'

On Friday 25th of June thirty people attended the presentation funded by Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and Organic Federation of Australia (OFA) to help all producers cope with extremes in climate. Adam Willson and Greg Paynter from Soil Systems Australia explained how to obtain consistently high yields of quality produce through world’s best science and proven practice in organic methods. It is that time of year for women working in primary industries to enter the 2011 RIRDC Rural Women’s Award – now in its 12th year! The award recognises and supports the contribution women make to rural Australia. Women working in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, natural resource management and related sectors should apply. Winners receive a $10,000 bursary aimed at assisting them to develop their skills and contribute to profitable and sustainable primary industries in Queensland.
