Cairns Local Food Market
The Network for Sustainable and Diversified Agriculture has secured funding to establish and coordinate on an ongoing basis, a Local Food Market in Cairns, through the Queensland government’s Blueprint for the Bush initiative. This market will provide opportunity Far North Queensland’s regional growers to showcase their produce and goods, to the local community and visitors alike. We hope this event will promote consumer consciousness about the social, environmental, nutritional and community benefits of supporting local food networks, and provide an outlet for discerning Cairns customers who seek fresh local produce.
We will model the event on other successful farmers and local produce markets in Australia. We hope to promote food diversity and gastronomic culture, and stimulate an awareness of tropical produce and seasonality.
The event will aim to have a relaxed atmosphere and will encourage other cultural, educational and social activities to take part within it.
Why Local?
Local produce is important because….
- It is healthier, because it is fresher and more nutritious.
- It has less food miles.
- It uses less fuel and releases less greenhouse gases.
- It leads to less waste.
- It supports the viability of independent primary producers, hobby farmers and home gardeners.
- It helps to maintain farmland in our region.
- Through improving farm profitability, it encourages sustainable farming practices.
- It contributes to the local economy of our community.
- It contributes to the social capital of our community.
- It encourages dialogue around issues surrounding farming between urban and rural counterparts within the region.
Where to now?
Whilst the Local Food Market is still in its early developmental stages, we are inviting stakeholders in FNQ’s food industries and interested individuals to contribute to the process. We seek to appoint a Market Coordinator in August 2008 and launch the market by April 2009. Your comments and thoughts on the development of this event are very welcome. Please contact NSDA for more information.
