| Invitation to Growers to Participate in a Trial of California Coastal Redwood |
|
One of the members of Private Forestry NQ, Mr. Wade Cornell, has some California Redwood trees for sale to anyone interested in participating in a planting "Trial of California coastal Redwood (Sequopia Sempervirens)". There is potential for a commercial outcome resulting from these trials. A lucrative market exists for California Redwood to be exported back to California. New Zealand is starting to partake in this exercise and has successfully exported several shipments utilizing some of their older trees. New Plantings in New Zealand will be between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 trees this year with many being planted by California investors. Areas around the Tablelands may be suited to these fast growing trees. One trial has been established at Topaz with trees now six months old and growing well. Ultimately redwoods selected for specific wood properties (clones) could be grown to replace imported Western Red Cedar. This is a one hundred-million dollar a year market with clear timber worth around $2000 per M3. Growth rates in New Zealand, in the warmest wettest areas, have rotation lengths of around 15 years. If successful in the Tablelands, we expect similar rotations. Potential sites should have good year-round rainfall and not be excessively windy. Participants must be willing to follow planting and maintenance instructions and measure/report growth when asked for data. Tree numbers are extremely limited.
