| National Threatened Species Day |
|
September the 7th, National Threatened Species Day for 2007, is fast approaching. The Threatened Species and Ecosystems Unit, EPA, is co-ordinating events across Queensland during Threatened Species Week 2nd to 8th September. This year the theme will be a focus on aquatic plant and animal species, and the slogan will be Get off our backs!
You are all invited to get involved to raise awareness about the key messages, and see where this theme can be highlighted in existing work. The key messages are:1. Ensuring that the use of our bays, beaches and waterways does not impact on threatened species by promoting: ‘Go slow for those below' with a focus on the threat of boat strike on dugong, inshore dolphins and turtles. Responsible use and disposal of fishing gear to reduce entanglement and infection risk on threatened dugong, turtles, sharks and sting rays. Responsible driving on beaches where shorebirds (e.g. threatened little terns) nest. 2. The impact of collecting of native fish and water plants by aquarium hobbyists. 3. The impact of releasing exotic fish and plants into waterways.
Here are some ways you can get involved: 1. Hold an Activity Organise a talk, wetland ramble, freshwater weed ID day or artesian spring adventure, rock-pool paddle or beach clean-up. Free stubby-holders, with ‘Get off our Backs' artwork (see designs below) and messages, will be available to use as give-aways for event organisers (But note that as numbers are limited, priority will be given to major events). The Threatened Species Unit will promote your activity on the EPA website and through other media. If you would like to hold an activity, please fill in the Activity Form (attached) so that we can promote your event, and return it to me by August 14th at the latest.
<< 2. Print and display the posters Electronic files of posters (A4, A3 and A1 size) will be available around the 24th August. These can be obtained from the nearest EPA office or talk to us and make arrangements for CD's to be sent. Print them out and use to promote your events and Threatened Species Week. Try the local tourist information office, caravan parks, fishing and outdoor stores, fish and chip shops, community centres, park notice boards or give away to schools. 3. Print and wear your own T-shirts The fantastic artwork created for the week will be available to create your own iron-on transfers for T-shirts with Threatened Species Week messages. Iron-on transfers are available at Officeworks and similar stores.
