NRM Lessons from Larry Forum

The “Celebrating recovery – Reporting on progress - Planning for the future” Forum is on in Innisfail, Thursday 24th May, 12.30 – 3.00pm. It will celebrate the positive aspects of natural resources recovery and the special efforts of members of our NRM community. 

 

This is a great opportunity to catch up on progress of the Lessons from Larry Action Plan and convey key messages from the Forum directly to the Department of Natural Resources and Water Director General. There is an option to stay on from 3 to 5pm as part of a working group to plan the next steps to implement Forum recommendations.

Pests Targeted in Environment Package
Dealing with feral pigs is one project being funded under a $13 million package to tackle some of Queensland's significant environmental challenges. $500,000 will be directed towards managing the feral pig problem in North Queensland.

Vegetation Management Workshops
Do you need tools to better manage your property and vegetation? Don't understand why you should lodge a Property Map of Assessable Vegetation (PMAV)? AgForward can help.

AgForward training will help you understand the requirements of the Vegetation Management Act 1999 (VMA) and is available to Landcare and catchment groups and all Queensland primary producers and rural landholders. Currently AgForward offers Vegetation Management and Computer Mapping workshops and in the coming months will roll out GPS training. Both workshops run for one day (9am to 4pm) and cost $100 per enterprise for non-AgForce members. Training can be held at a location of your choice, if ten or more enterprises form a group.

Compost Talk for International Composting Awareness Week

6 - 12 May 2007 is "Compost... for a Healthy Earth" week. The aim is to improve awareness about the importance of this valuable organic resource, and to promote composting and compost use through activities, events and publicity.

The Douglas Shire Local Produce Group will celebrate the Week by holding a talk in the Mossman library. Learn about composting in the Far North, and look at what's in season now and how to grow it, with plants and cuttings available.

Water Quality Incentives Scheme
FNQNRM Ltd have recently announced the 2007 round of their Water Quality Incentives Scheme, after $200,000 of National Landcare Programme funds were successfully sourced for this purpose.

FNQ NRM Ltd works in partnership with the community to ensure a sustainable social, economic and environmental future for the Wet Tropics region of Queensland. Projects must clearly contribute to the natural resource management priorities set by the community of the region. These include:

  • prevention or reduction of soil loss from farms
  • maintaining sustainable production capacity of land
  • improving water quality by reducing nutrient loss

while preserving our natural cultural heritage.
