World Rural Women's Day Brisbane - Sonya Maley Guest Speaker

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) and Queensland Business Review (QBR) Women in Business invite guests to participate in the annual WRWD agribusiness breakfast on Friday, 12 October. This year's speaker is Sonya Maley from Far North Queensland, Queensland 's 2007 Rural Woman of the Year.

Sonya is Managing Director of Resis  Australia , a company she established to commercialise sugar cane products using alternative milling technology.

Sonya is committed to finding sustainable rural solutions for north Queensland and has worked with dogged determination in finding alternate and value adding opportunities for the cane industry.

Resis Australia is using innovative technology to research and develop new healthy foods from sugarcane. The increasing occurrence of diabetes, obesity and tooth decay is often linked to the high intake of processed sugar, however in countries where unprocessed sugarcane is eaten, these ailments aren't as prevalent. Sonya believes that sugarcane can be good for you and is using science to unlock its natural health benefits.

Sonya's contribution to innovation in the sugar industry led to her appointment as a Diversification and Value Adding Advisor to the Far North Queensland Regional Advisory Group-a committee overseeing the strategic restructure and revitalization of north Queensland's sugar industry.
